Let’s “Disc-us” Disc Golf!
You may have never seen or heard of disc golf, not long ago I did not either! Don’t you worry though, I am here to “disc-us” it with you so you have some basic knowledge! I hope this “disc-ussion” piques your interest and makes you want to play!

Even though many people do not play traditional golf, they are aware of the basic rules of how the game is played. If you want to learn how to play disc golf, the rules are just like regular golf but the game is played with discs instead of clubs and golf balls. Recreational disc golf rules are easy to learn and easy to apply to your game.

The main objective of the game is a simple one. Get the disc in the basket with as few throws as possible. The lower your score is at the end of the game the better it is for you! Courses are usually created to have an 18-basket layout. Be ready for a bit of a walk! Some courses are very large but the views are unbeatable! Each hole has a par score that you try to remain under. A par is the amount of throw it should take you to get the disc in the basket. The player with the least amount of throws at the end of the game gets bragging rights as the winner! Now let’s get down to a few more of the basics just to make sure your first game goes smoothly!

For each hole, you start at a tee and your initial throw must be behind that designated area. As you continue you must throw your next throw from directly behind where your last disc landed, this is called a lie. A lie, to put it simply is where your disc is laying from your previous throw. On each tee, there is a throwing order. Remember when I said it is good to have as few throws as possible, well that applies during the entire game. Whoever completed the previous throw in the least amount of throws goes first. There are also hazards and out-of-bounds areas just like in traditional golf. If you land in these, a player must add a throw to their count on that hole.

Now that you have a knowledge of disc golf and how to play it, let’s keep this “disc-ussion” going! Spread the word about this amazing sport and get out there and play! I can promise you, you will enjoy it!
Kraken Disc Golf: Unleashing My Story
The Kraken Disc golf was an idea I had because compared to other areas in the United States, Louisiana has fewer courses and less awareness of disc golf and disc golf events. My goal was and still is to educate, raise awareness, grow the sport, and create fun content that people could enjoy. I came up with the name because my disc golf group that I play with calls me Kraken. Not so long ago, I had never even heard of disc golf, but soon I was hooked!

When we were in quarantine during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, my husband and I were bored and looking for outdoor activities that we could enjoy together. A close friend suggested we try playing disc golf and told us about a few courses in the area. We went to a sporting goods store and purchased an Innova Disc Golf starter set. The starter set had everything we needed, a putter, a midrange, and a driver. We knew nothing about the sport other than it was played similarly to traditional golf but went out and gave it a shot. We were immediately addicted to disc golf after that first round of play. One of the things we loved about disc golf is it is fun to play alone or with big groups. It is truly something that anyone can enjoy. When the quarantine lifted, we introduced our friends to the sport. Since then we have been trying to get as many people to play. Our love and passion continues growing.

As we started to play more, learn more, and follow disc golf pages on social media, we started hearing about local tournaments to play in. We usually play in at least one tournament a month and have met so many new friends from playing disc golf. Following other disc golf pages on social media piqued my interest in wanting to start the Kraken Disc Golf. One issue I noticed locally, is that we do not have any stores where you can purchase disc or disc golf merchandise. I was spending a lot of money ordering discs online and not knowing if I would like the feel of them. I also started looking up courses in different states and noticed Louisiana does not have nearly as many as other states. This sparked my need to do something to make a change and help the sport grow.

In addition to my social media page, I began emailing local sporting goods stores asking if they had any interest in starting to sell disc golf merchandise. I gaver them some facts about the game and gave them the names of local disc golf groups so they would feel confident in selling merchandise. I continue to follow up with these stores. They have informed me that they are working on getting things together to be able to sell disc golf merchandise. I am happy to see that my trying to influence others is working though I still have a lot of work to put into growing the sport.

I will continue to advocate for the sport and try to get people interested in disc golf. All it takes is one person at a time. I do not doubt that once you have that first round of disc golf you will enjoy it and want to keep playing. The community and friends you make along the way the reason it is wonderful. I hope that one day you unleash your passion for disc golf and will enjoy it and have as much passion for the sport as I do.
